Now that the Jeremy Lin storm has subsided it’s become clear once again that the problem that existed before Linsanity took New York by storm still exists. The Knicks need a new head coach.
The Lynch excursion obscured the fact that Mike Detony is not the coach for this team and that’s regardless of whether the Knicks made the playoffs or whether they don’t.
Detony is the not the entire problem, you know the coach seldom is. But this team needs a new voice, it needs a new mindset, and it needs a large dose of inspiration.
The good news is that the Knicks found a point guard. In fact they have two, with Lin and Darren Davis. They have great talents in Carmelo Anthony, and Omari Stardomire and they’ve got an outstanding defensive presence in Tyson Chandler. The problem is that the Knicks have a coach who’s lost his ability to inspire. That is if he ever really had it.
You know, you can talk your way in and out of things for only so long but at some point in time you’ve got to be able to touch souls. You know for example in Boston, Doc Rivers got Kevin Garnet, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen to buy into the fact that the individual was not greater than the team. In Chicago, Tom Tibidow got the Bulls to embrace a defense now, defense forever mentality that’s made Chicago an elite team.
Unfortunately, Detony is an offense now, offense forever coach. He can’t preach the gospel defense because he doesn’t believe it. The Knicks hired Detony as an antidote for Iziah Thomas, who was generally despised.
